Every week, Suite 101 ranks the top 16 NASCAR Nextel Cup drivers based on results and performance.
Carl Edwards wins the caution-filled event at Dover on Sunday after holding off his Roush Fenway Racing teammate Greg Biffle. Kyle Petty and Denny Hamlin nearly came to blows after a lap 200 incident, which resulted in Petty hitting the outside wall. Petty approached Hamlin's car and proceeded to reprimand and smack the visor of the second-year driver.
"I guess it's my fault. I watched the Busch race yesterday and knew Denny was sick. I just didn't know he was hallucinating and needed three lanes to get up off the corner because he ran all over us." said the furious Petty. Hamlin's retort left a sort of stinging sensation to a lot of fans. "The biggest thing is that I know Kyle gets run over a lot, and a lot of the reason is that he's so far off the pace...You've got a car two seconds off the pace or whatever it may be. We're in a [cluster] of leaders, and he's racing his own little battle and some days it's your day and some days it's not. Get out of the way."
1. (1) 24-Jeff Gordon: It was a surprisingly mediocre day for Jeff Gordon at Dover.
2. (3) 20-Tony Stewart: Tony Stewart finished 9th with a 20th place car.
3. (5) 99-Carl Edwards: Could Carl Edwards really become the NASCAR Nextel Cup Series champion and Busch Series champion in the same season?
4. (2) 48-Jimmie Johnson: Jimmie Johnson escapes Dover with a respectable 14th place finish after cutting down a tire.
5. (6) 5-Kyle Busch: The fact that Kyle Busch is leaving Hendrick Motorsports at the end of the season has not hindered the 5 team.
6. (8) 07-Clint Bowyer: Clint Bowyer may have been on his way to another top five finish if he could have avoided the Denny Hamlin and Kyle Petty incident.
7. (9) 1-Martin Truex Jr: For Martin Truex Jr, it wasn’t better the second time around.
8. (7) 17-Matt Kenseth: Matt Kenseth was overdue for an engine failure. He will likely be steady throughout the remainder of the Chase for the Championship.
9. (4) 11-Denny Hamlin: Hey, at least Denny Hamlin took his helmet off before he got out of the car.
10. (11) 31-Jeff Burton: Jeff Burton finished 8th? Wasn’t he one of the first few drivers to go a lap down?
11. (10) 2-Kurt Busch: It is bad enough when you wreck, but it is even worse when you take your teammate down with you.
12. (12) 29-Kevin Harvick: Kevin Harvick’s championship hopes are sinking like a ship.
13. (14) 8-Dale Earnhardt Jr: Amidst the craziness at Dover, Dale Earnhardt Jr emerges with a third place finish.
14. (13) 12-Ryan Newman: Not only is Ryan Newman battling Dale Earnhardt Jr for 13th in the Nextel Cup standings, but he is catching up as the driver with the worst racing luck. How many top fives would Newman have if luck would have been on his side?
15. (15) 25-Casey Mears: Casey Mears finished sixth, which is a good sign for Dale Earnhardt Jr since that will be his ride next year.
16. (NR) 16-Greg Biffle: Greg Biffle would have been the first driver ever to win a NASCAR Nextel Cup race with Nintendo as the sponsor.
