With drivers Kasey Kahne, Elliott Sadler, Reed Sorenson, and A.J. Allmendinger, Richard Petty Motorsports is becoming a contender for the Sprint Cup Championship.

The Richard Petty Motorsports NASCAR racing team has everything needed to compete for a Sprint Cup Championship. It has history, a racing legend, experienced people to run the organization and a desire to win. Owner Richard Petty comes from a family background of racing history. His father, Lee Petty started racing cars on the dirt tracks of North Carolina with the real “drive them on the road” stock cars and subsequently won three Grand National Championships (now Sprint Cup).

Richard Petty Driving Career

Richard began driving in 1958 and won his first race at the Charlotte Speedway in 1960. During his 32 years of racing career on the NASCAR Winston Cup circuit, he won seven Winston Cup (now Sprint Cup) Championships and received awards too numerous to list. Richard was voted the most popular Cup Series Driver a total of nine years and became known to his fans as “The King”. A partial listing of his accomplishments, although extensive, can be seen here.

Richard Petty retired from competitive driving at the end of the 1992 NASCAR season. Forming the NASCAR team of Petty Enterprises with son Kyle, the drive for perfection and winning continued.

Petty, Evernham, Gillett Form NASCAR Team

In January 2009, Gillett Evernham Motorsports completed a merger with Petty Enterprises which formed the NASCAR team of Richard Petty Motorsports. This NASCAR team supports four Sprint Cup Cars:

  • Car # 9 driven by Kasey Kahne, winner of the 2008 All Star Race after being voted in as “the Fan Favorite”. When Kahne crossed the finish line, the fans won that race! Kasey also won the Infineon Race in 2009 at Sonoma, California and both he and Richard Petty sipped wine in victory lane. Richard sported his traditional cowboy hat, black sunglasses and big smile.
  • Car # 19 driven by Elliott Sadler
  • Car # 43 driven by Reed Sorenson
  • Car # 44 driven by A.J. Allmendinger

Richard Petty Motorsports has four owners:

  • Richard Petty
  • Ray Evernham has a passion for automobiles. He started driving race cars in 1979 and in 1983 resurrected the International Race of Champions (IROC) Series. After working with the up-coming driver Jeff Gordon at Hendrick Motorsports, Evernham chose to start his own NASCAR racing team in 2000. He teamed up with DaimlerChrysler’s performance brand Dodge and spearheaded the manufacturer’s re-entry to NASCAR racing.
  • George Gillett, Jr. brings a passion for winning to the entire team. The International businessman owns and directs Booth Creek Management Corp, which oversees interests in diverse businesses including reports, meat packing, car dealerships and professional sports. Gillett owns and serves as chairman and director of NHL’S Montreal’s Canadian Hockey Team, FA’s Liverpool Football Club and the NASCAR team of Richard Petty Motorsports. He is a member of the Board of Governors and a member of the executive committee of the National Hockey League.
  • Boston Ventures is a private equity firm in the United States with a 25 year history and focuses on middle-market media, information and publishing, entertainment and communication opportunities.

With an extensive and impressive history in NASCAR, an icon in Richard Petty and superb leadership, the Richard Petty Motorsports team has once again become a factor in the chase for a NASCAR Sprint Cup Championship.
