Roush Fenway Racing is one of the largest NASCAR teams, operating from a base in Concord, North Carolina. Since Roush Racing was founded in 1988, Ford brand automobiles have been used exclusively. The Ford Fusion competes in the Sprint Cup and Nationwide Series, while the Ford F-150 truck runs in the Camping World Truck Series. Since the 2004 season, engines for the cars and trucks have been provided by Roush-Yates Engines, a partnership between Roush Fenway Racing and Yates Racing. NASCAR Team Driver SelectionsNeeding to make selections of potential drivers every two to three years, Jack Roush started “The Roush Racing Gong Show”, later known as “Driver X” as a way to search for potential drivers. Applications from thousands of drivers are accepted. The competitors are put through a series of written tests, with the elite finalists having test sessions on a race track, like Martinsville or Darlington. Each competitor must be able to present themselves favorably with the news media and have fan appeal. Names like Wally Dallenbach, Jr., Robby Gordon, Carl Edwards, Kurt Busch, David Gilliland, Justin Allgaier, Erik Darnell, Danny O’Quinn, David Ragan, Regan Smith and Todd Kulever are all drivers that have competed on the “Gong Show” and found success in NASCAR. Jack Roush CareerJack Roush was born in Covington, Kentucky in 1942 and grew up in Manchester, Ohio. He graduated from Berea College with a major in mathematics and a minor in physics in 1964. He was recruited by Ford Motor Company and went to Detroit to work on the processing of car assembling and tooling. After graduating from Eastern Michigan University with a Master’s Degree in Scientific Mathematics, he moved to the engine research and development area. This is where Jack became involved with the group known as the “Fastbacks” which researched and developed the Ford Shelby Mustangs. Leaving Ford in May of 1969, Roush began purchasing his own equipment to improve the racing performance of the Fastbacks and soon after he was doing development work for other teams. The “Fastbacks” disbanded in 1970 and Roush, along with Wayne Capp, for the next five years won national attention by winning events and championships in NHRA, IHRA and AHRA. In 1984 Roush returned to competition in the sports Car Club of America (SCCA) and the International Motor Sports Association (IMSA) road racing series. In 1988 he expanded his racing business to include a NASCAR Winston Cup team with driver Mark Martin. The legend of winning has continued. For 37 years Jack Roush has been committed to winning on and off the track. Roush Racing has won championships in drag racing, sports car racing, stock car racing and truck racing.
