Every week Suite 101 ranks the top 16 NASCAR Nextel Cup drivers based on results and performance.
Ryan Newman falls out while Greg Biffle and David Stremme re-enter the Suite 16 NASCAR Nextel Cup rankings. Jimmie Johnson holds on to the top spot.
1. (1) 48-Jimmie Johnson: It is hard to put a guy with three wins after seven races anywhere but the number one spot.
2. (2) 24-Jeff Gordon: Jeff Gordon is performing remarkably; however, he just cannot seem to close the deal.
3. (3) 17-Matt Kenseth: Only two drivers have been even comparable to the Hendrick Motorsports duo of Jeff Gordon and Jimmie Johnson- Jeff Burton and Matt Kenseth.
4. (4) 31-Jeff Burton: Jeff Burton has taken Mark Martin’s place as the sentimental favorite to win the NASCAR Nextel Cup championship.
5. (7) 11-Denny Hamlin: Sophomore slump! What sophomore slump?
6. (5) 20-Tony Stewart: Juan Pablo Montoya now has a target on his back.
7. (6) 5-Kyle Busch: It is an unwritten rule- do not leave the track if your crew is still working on your car.
8. (10) 07-Clint Bowyer: Clint Bowyer finished much better than he ran. He finished 16th so he apparently did not run that well.
9. (12) 26-Jamie McMurray: So far, Jamie McMurray is the most improved driver in NASCAR, closely followed by David Stremme.
10. (11) 99-Carl Edwards: At this pace, Carl Edwards will have the NASCAR Busch Series title clinched before the season’s halfway mark.
11. (8) 29-Kevin Harvick: Kevin Harvick has to be glad that Phoenix is next on the schedule. He won both races at the 1-mile oval in 2006, and he is in dire need of a good finish.
12. (9) 8-Dale Earnhardt Jr: Dale Earnhardt Jr in a Hendrick Motorsports car? I wonder how Junior nation feels about that.
13. (13) 01-Mark Martin: The 01 car has not ran this well since…never.
14. (14) 2-Kurt Busch: If Sunday was any indication, Kurt Busch and Penske Racing have their intermediate programs figured out.
15. (15) 42-Juan Pablo Montoya: Add Tony Stewart to Juan Pablo Montoya’s growing list of enemies.
16. (NR) 40-David Stremme: Finally, David Stremme has a top ten in Nextel Cup.
Tie: 16-Greg Biffle: Is it just me, or does Greg Biffle have a different sponsor every other race?
