Every week, Suite 101 ranks the top 16 NASCAR Nextel Cup drivers based on results and performance.
I know that I'm late this week with the Suite 16 Rankings, but I have been out of town. I'm back and ready to dish out NASCAR and other Auto Racing content. Tony Stewart continues his mid-season surge as he wins his second consecutive Nextel Cup event at Indianapolis. It was his second All State (Brickyard) 400 victory. 1. (1) 24-Jeff Gordon: Jeff Gordon is still sittin’ pretty, but Tony Stewart is the last guy that he wants to see gaining on him as the Chase for the Championship approaches. 2. (4) 20-Tony Stewart: If Tony Stewart can keep his temper in check, and that is a big IF, he may be the guy that stands in the way of Jeff Gordon’s fifth championship. 3. (2) 11-Denny Hamlin: If it were not for several pit road blunders, Denny Hamlin would be a little bit closer to Jeff Gordon in the Nextel Cup standings. 4. (3) 17-Matt Kenseth: Matt Kenseth continues to steadily chase his second championship. 5. (6) 31-Jeff Burton: I bet Jeff Burton wishes he would have knocked Kyle Busch out of the way at Bristol when he had the chance. 6. (8) 29-Kevin Harvick: I have been waiting six years for a Kevin Harvick vs Tony Stewart feud to erupt. 7. (5) 48-Jimmie Johnson: What is going on with Jimmie Johnson and the 48 team? 8. (7) 99-Carl Edwards: The Busch Series event in Montreal will be one of the few in which Carl Edwards is not the favorite to win. 9. (10) 5-Kyle Busch: Kyle Busch continues to tick off opponents. 10. (9) 1-Martin Truex Jr: Martin Truex Jr’s momentum appears to have stalled over the last month or so. 11. (11) 07-Clint Bowyer: Clint Bowyer continues to quietly secure his spot in the Chase for the Championship. 12. (12) 8-Dale Earnhardt Jr: If it were not for a sour engine, Dale Earnhardt Jr would have really gained on the Chase bubble boys at Indianapolis. 13. (14) 2-Kurt Busch: Despite everything, Kurt Busch may sneak past Dale Earnhardt Jr before the Chase for the Championship begins. 14. (13) 12-Ryan Newman: Every time Ryan Newman gets close enough to smell the top 12, some kind of misfortune sets him back. 15. (NR) 42-Juan Pablo Montoya: Scott Pruett is thrilled to see Juan Pablo Montoya’s name missing from the Montreal entry list. 16. (15) 26-Jamie McMurray: Jamie McMurray and the 26 team have been way too inconsistent in 2007.
